Portraits of Service (November 17, 2024- January 2, 2025)

Creative Spirit Community Arts Center: 6-8 Raymond Street in Potsdam, NY 13676

Portraits of Service is an upcoming exhibit that seeks to pair talented artists with individuals who have made significant contributions to our community. Through this partnership, artists will have the opportunity to learn about the life and work of a community member dedicated to bettering our region. Using these personal narratives as inspiration, artists will create an original piece of art that reflects and honors the service and commitment of their partnered community member. Our opening reception at the Creative Spirit Community Arts Center will showcase the artwork and allow community members to engage with both the artists and the individuals whose lives have inspired the creations.

Artists: If you’re an artist interested in participating, we invite you to submit samples of your work along with a brief statement explaining your interest in this collaborative project. Selected artists will be paired with a community member and provided with the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations to gain insight into their experiences, challenges, and triumphs. Using these shared stories as inspiration, artists will then create an original piece of art that captures the essence of their partner’s journey of service. Artists who are chosen will receive a $100 stipend for the creation of artwork.

Community Members: Are you a community member who has dedicated your life to making a difference in the North Country region? We want to hear your story and celebrate your contributions. Selected community members will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with an artist to help them create a meaningful representation of their service and impact.

Guidelines:

The Re-Imagined Judy Chicago Dinner Party (January 16, 2025- March 26, 2025)

Creative Spirit Community Arts Center: 6-8 Raymond Street in Potsdam, NY 13676

SLC Arts is thrilled to announce a unique opportunity for women artists to contribute to the reimagining of Judy Chicago’s iconic artwork, “The Dinner Party.” This project aims to honor and celebrate prominent women who have made significant contributions to our society, particularly those who were not included in the original installation because over 40 years have passed.

We are making a call for 24 women artists with strong ties to the North Country to apply to be chosen to create a portion of our dinner party with 12 settings which include 12 tapestries and 12 place settings. To be considered for this collaboration project, please complete the following form. Artists who are chosen and complete their portion of this artwork will receive a $100 stipend.

Process:

  • 12 artists will create tapestries honoring notable women, while the other 12 will design place settings using their preferred mediums.
  • Artists will be paired to ensure cohesion in the representation of each prominent woman, but will work independently on their pieces. The women that will be represented in the gallery showing will be chosen as a collective on our collaboration meeting on June 6th.
  • A mini Dinner party will be hosted in the SLC Arts gallery starting in January 2025, showcasing the completed settings and tapestries alongside a list of honored women emulating Judy Chicago’s work.

Guidance:

  • Artists will draw inspiration from the archives of “The Dinner Party” to select figures for representation on our meeting collaboration meeting on June 6, 2024 at 6:00pm at SLC Arts.
  • Highlighted women will be local Mohawk women, historical figures from St. Lawrence County, and influential artists who have paved the way for others.
