Sharon HJ Cheng Contemporary Visual Arts
Sharon H.J. Cheng is a multidisciplinary visual artist, and is a returning artist to the Studio Tour.
Originally from Taiwan, now based in Potsdam, New York, Sharon’s practice is grounded in oil painting and expands into contemporary sumi-e, installation, drawing, and mixed-media sculpture. Drawing on both Eastern philosophy and global experience, her work explores themes of energy, harmony, and cultural reflection.
A grantee of the Starr Foundation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1989), a New York Foundation for the Arts MARK ’09 artist, and a 2022–2024 CRNY/AEP artist, Cheng holds academic degrees in art and has contributed to the field through her work at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum and in several university settings.
At the heart of Cheng’s work is a meditation on the flow of Chi—the spirit and life force—expressed through the interplay of stillness and motion, form and emotion. Circles frequently appear as symbols of continuity and peace, while color becomes a language of feeling and quiet resonance.
Rooted in her Taiwanese heritage and shaped by her life in upstate New York, Sharon H.J. Cheng’s art offers a space for reflection—a gentle exchange between the visible and the invisible, inviting viewers into a moment of calm awareness and connection.
