Exhibit: Esthela Calderon: Inside the Ancestral Current

April 19, 2017 @ 9:00 am - May 26, 2017 @ 4:00 pm

Inside the Ancestral Current

Open Exhibit at SLCArts Gallery at Town Hall
April 19 – May 26, 2017

Open during Town Hall hours

Monday-Friday 9 am-4 pm

Description: The paintings in this exhibit are designed as a way of not forgetting the mechanisms of memory. They depict a particle of time, the birth of an idea, a color, a form, a texture, something’s size. The imprint that remains resembles photographs of pigments removed from the brain at the moment of their creation. The paintings also recall the Amerindian practice of making codexes and petroglyphs to conserve the yearly cycles of indigenous communities and to render homage to their gods.

Esthela Calderón was born in 1970 in Nicaragua. She is known mainly as a poet, and is the author of Soledad, Amor y conciencia, Soplo de corriente vital, Coyol quebrado, Los huesos de mi abuelo, and Las manos que matan. She also wrote 8 caras de una moneda, a novel that culminates in the 1979 Nicaraguan Revolution. She is the Director of the Promotora Cultural Leonesa in León, Nicaragua. She works as an Adjunct Instructor at St. Lawrence University. In 2016 her painting “Pigments of Memory” won Honorable Mention in the Abstraction Exhibition at Bluseed Studios in Saranac Lake.

Calderon’s art will be on display at the SLC Arts Gallery at the Potsdam Town Hall, 18 Elm Street, through May 26, 2017. The exhibit and opening are free and open to the public, and wheelchair accessible. The Gallery is open during Town Hall business hours, Mondays through Fridays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
