Shubha Banavar: meet-the-artist
November 16 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
The St. Lawrence County Arts Council will hold a meet-the-artist event on Friday, November 16th, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the SLC Arts Gallery at the Potsdam Town Hall. Community members are invited to come as they are to meet artist Shubha Banavar and view an exhibit of her work.
Shubha Banavar of Potsdam is known for her interest in minimalist pencil and brush techniques used to describe complex cultural mores of India. These include depictions of religious icons though line drawings, henna designs, art inspired by antique jewelry, and capturing the complexity of nature through simple art structures. Banavar’s educational training is in science, but combines it with her passion for art. Her interests in science visualization include creating scenes, models, and 3D animations. At 4:30 pm Banavar will discuss her recently acquired talent in Tanjore painting, an Indian art style. This process uses gold foil and semi precious stones to embellish the piece. She will also be talking about Ganjifa, or Indian hand-painted playing cards. Both techniques are of a classical style, originating from Southern India.
This exhibit at the SLC Arts Gallery at the Potsdam Town Hall, 18 Elm Street, is FREE, open to everyone, and wheelchair accessible. This exhibit will be on display through January 11th. The Gallery is open during Town Hall business hours, Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, and Fridays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Art sales benefit the artists and SLC Arts.
